The NATO summit is held in Lithuania on July 11-12 amid the war in Russia-Ukraine. It was believed that the membership of Ukraine could be discussed in this conference.
However, 2 days before the event, America said such a thing about Ukraine that Zelenskyy would only feel disappointed. America has clearly stated that Ukraine cannot be included in NATO.
In an exclusive interview with CNN, US President Joe Biden said that Ukraine is not yet ready to join NATO. Biden said that Ukraine needs to end the ongoing Ukraine war with Russia, and only then can NATO think about it.
Biden’s statement is considered a major blow to Ukraine as Ukraine has been requesting to join NATO for a long time.
Biden said I don’t think there is a consensus in NATO right now in the middle of the war on whether or not Ukraine should be brought into the NATO family. We are determined to hold every inch of NATO territory. It is a commitment we all must keep, no matter what. If the war is going on, we all are in the war.
Biden said he has spoken in detail on this issue with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He has told the Ukrainian president that until the process is complete, the US will continue to provide security and arms for Ukraine as it does for Israel.
The US President continued, “We must find a rational way to make Ukraine eligible to join NATO. NATO has always followed an open door policy.”
Joe Biden said, ‘I think it is too early to say that voting should be done because the rest of the qualifications have not been met, including democratization and some other issues.’ Biden said that to become a NATO member, Ukraine must also accept all the conditions other countries accept.
Let us tell you that this is not the first time that Biden has said such things about Ukraine. Last month, US President Joe Biden said that we would not make any special arrangements for Ukraine to get NATO membership. Ukraine should not rely on us. Biden said that the US would not reduce any standards related to membership in Ukraine.
Let us tell you that the attitude of America regarding NATO membership of Ukraine has changed recently. Earlier, America said it would remove all the major challenges coming in the way of Ukraine becoming a NATO member. Let us tell you that the demand for including NATO in Ukraine is very old.
At the 2008 NATO summit in Kharst, it was agreed to make Ukraine a part of NATO for the first time. During this, every member of NATO had agreed to include Ukraine in the alliance. However, even after 15 years, Ukraine’s dream of becoming a NATO member remains incomplete.
