Iran has claimed that it has developed a hypersonic missile capable of travelling at 15 times the speed of sound. Iran has made this announcement at a time when the country’s relations with the US regarding its nuclear program are already strained.
Firepower Up To 1400 km
Iran’s state television said in a report that the missile named ‘Fattah’ can cover a distance of up to 1,400 km. The news also claimed that the missile could pass through any regional missile defence system, although no evidence was presented to support this claim.
Iran Has Reserves
In footage aired on TV, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards unveiled the missile model in front of President Ibrahim Raisi. Iran has a huge stock of ballistic missiles. In November, General Amir Ali Hajizadeh of the Revolutionary Guard claimed that Iran had developed a hypersonic missile but did not present any evidence in favour.
Last Year Claim
The General made this claim when the country’s morality police arrested 22-year-old Mahsa Amini for not wearing the hijab properly. After this, he died in police custody. People claimed that Mahsa died because of a police beating. But the police claimed that Mehsa Amini died of a heart attack. Due to this incident, there was a flood of protests in the country and a lot of anger among the people. After this demonstration, the economic situation in Iran had worsened.
Hypersonic Weapon Is Dangerous
Significantly, due to its high speed, the hypersonic weapon can pose severe challenges to the missile defense system.
