Italy’s first female Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, is currently in the headlines. She has been named ‘Man of the Year’ by Libero Quotidiano, a far-right daily newspaper published in Milan. The newspaper said that Georgia has achieved an unprecedented victory in 2023.
Women Politicians Did Not Like The Decision
However, naming Giorgia Meloni as ‘Man of the Year’ did not go down well with women’s rights activists and many female politicians. They saw the term as an affirmation of male superiority.
Elisabetta Piccolotti, an MP from Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra (Greens and Left Alliance), wrote on Facebook that Meloni should reject the title, as it was merely an affirmation of male superiority.
In a post on Facebook, Piccolotti asked Meloni to clarify whether she was a woman, a man, or neither.
Why Has Giorgia Meloni Been Called ‘Man Of The Year’?
According to an article by the newspaper’s Rome bureau chief Mario Sechi, Meloni broke the glass ceiling by winning ‘the war of the sexes’ in Italy. The report said that we have chosen someone who shows she knows how to fight.
It is noteworthy that Mario Cecchi led Meloni’s public relations team between March and September before joining the newspaper. He said the Prime Minister faced two wars, several geopolitical shocks, a changing Europe and a reshaped world order.
Cecchi said that Giorgia Meloni is the ‘Man of the Year’ for Libero because she overcame men’s ego and women’s defeat by winning the war of the sexes.
