China Targets America’s Spies With AI; CIA Scrambles To Catch Up

China’s top intelligence agency uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to monitor American spies and others. According to a report in The New York Times, the Chinese AI system can create instant dossiers to monitor American spies. Citing an internal meeting memo, the report said, “The AI-generated profile will help Chinese spies identify American spies and their networks and vulnerabilities.”

The Ministry of State Security (MSS), China’s main intelligence agency, has prepared itself through extensive recruitment. The report claims that the agency is trying to improve itself through better training, a bigger budget and the use of advanced technology to meet the goals of Chinese leader Xi Jinping so that the country can target America as the world’s leading economic and military power.

Work To Deal With China’s Challenges

MSS is using AI to challenge American spies in a way the Soviet Union could not. China’s advanced spy-tracking program highlights the critical role of advanced technology in the emerging rivalry between the MSS and the CIA.

On this issue, Yun Sun, director of the China Program at the Stimson Center in DC., told the Times that exploiting the existing technology or trade secrets of others has become a popular shortcut for China, encouraged by the government.

On the other hand, in the use of AI by China, Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Deputy Director David Cohen said that the intelligence agency under US President Joe Biden is working to deal with China’s challenges.

CIA Deputy Director Engaged In Gathering Information

“We have been counting China’s tanks and understanding its missile capabilities for a longer time than we have focused on its semiconductor or AI capabilities,” CIA Deputy Director David Cohen said in an interview. To better understand what technologies it targets, the CIA has begun asking US officials and scholars for information about what Chinese companies are trying to develop.
