Xi Jinping’s New Foreign Policy; A Bold Move To Protect China’s Sovereignty

China New Foreign Law: China’s top diplomat Wang Yi said on Thursday (June 29) that his country had enacted its first foreign relations law, which will work against Western countries’ sanctions and protect national sovereignty. The new law, passed on Wednesday (June 28) by the Standing Committee of China’s parliament, the National People’s Congress, will take effect from July 1 amid concerns over Chinese foreign law enforcement activities.

The new law also enshrines the promotion of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s foreign policy initiatives on global security, development and civilization by law. An article of the law states that any organization or individual who commits any act that Harms China’s national interests under this law or from the point of view of international relations will be held responsible by law.

As A Deterrent To Sanctions

China’s official news agency Xinhua, citing another article on the new law, said, “The People’s Republic of China has the right to counter or take preventive measures against acts that threaten its sovereignty, national security and development.” that violate international law or the fundamental norms governing international relations.

Defending the new law, Wang, director of the Foreign Affairs Commission Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, said it (the law) would deter sanctions.

‘Urgent Need For Foreign Relations Law’

Wang said foreign relations law is urgently needed to protect China’s sovereignty globally amid China’s ambitions and increasingly assertive foreign policy concerns. “China faces an increasing number of unpredictable factors and must continually expand its legal toolbox for overseas conflicts,” Wang, President Jinping’s chief foreign policy adviser, said in an article published in the Communist Party mouthpiece People’s Daily on Thursday.
