Argentina Will Buy Tejas Jet From India

Argentina’s Defense Minister Jorge Tayna is visiting India, where he will meet Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh today. DD News reports that the two sides are expected to discuss ways to strengthen defence and cooperation.

At the same time, according to the report of Hindustan, during this visit of Argentina’s Defense Minister, there is a possibility of a deal of Rs 8675 crore with India for the fourth generation fighter aircraft Tejas Mark-1A and LCH Prachanda.

Defence officials said that Argentine Defense Minister Jorge Tena is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with his Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh in Delhi. Ways to strengthen defence and cooperation between the two countries are expected to be discussed during the meeting.

Last year, The South American nation showed interest in buying India’s indigenous light combat aircraft Tejas for the Argentine Air Force. At the same time, in early June this year, Indian Ambassador to Argentina Dinesh Bhatia discussed cooperation in Tejas fighter jets with Argentine Air Force Chief Brigadier General Javier Isaac. Argentina is also eyeing different types of helicopters manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

The Indian Embassy in Argentina has tweeted that Ambassador Dinesh Bhatia will be accompanied by Brigadier General Javier Isaac, Chief of the Argentine Air Force, who will meet the technical team of HAL with a delegation. During this time, Tejas fighter jets and HAL-manufactured Different types of helicopters will be discussed.

According to the report, Argentina wants to buy 12 light combat aircraft Tejas from India, for which it has received a letter of intent regarding JF-17 from China and Tejas from HAL.

China had offered JF-17 to Argentina, and initially, it was believed that Indian Tejas could be tough competition in front of Chinese JF-17. Still, HAL moved quickly in this matter and, compared to Tejas, Chinese JF -17 lagged. Argentina is now going to finalize the deal for Tejas.

India Will Upgrade Tejas

According to the report, HAL must replace more than 50 systems and sub-systems of Tejas for the deal with Argentina supplied by UK companies such as BAE Systems, Cobham and Martin-Baker.

An Rs 8675 crore deal with HAL for 15 Tejas Mark-1A and Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachanda will likely be signed in a bilateral meeting between Argentine Defense Minister Jorge Taiana and Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. Argentina’s Defense Minister and Air Force Chief had expressed their desire to buy this aircraft by flying in Tejas in Aero India 2023.

Tejas, the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) made in India, is fast becoming the first choice of many countries. Malaysia, Argentina, Australia, Egypt, America, Indonesia and the Philippines have also shown interest in buying Tejas.

Malaysia has decided to buy Tejas MK-1A for its fighter jet program to counter the Chinese JF-17. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has also responded to the RFI request of the Royal Malaysian Air Force. After this, HAL may soon get the first export order for Tejas.
