The United States has advised its citizens to use caution when travelling to China. Given the risk of arbitrary law enforcement, exit restrictions, and wrongful detention in China, this advisory has been issued.
The advice comes after a 78-year-old US citizen was sentenced to life in prison on espionage charges in May. John Shing-wan Leung, sentenced to life imprisonment, was arrested in Hong Kong on April 15, 2021.
A State Department spokeswoman said it had advised citizens to exercise caution when deciding whether to travel to China because of the increased risk of US citizens being illegally detained there.
Let us tell you that China has recently passed an anti-espionage law, which has created panic among the foreign nationals present there. China says that with this new law, it will strengthen its national security.
The Chinese government brought this law in the year 2014. However, it has been implemented after 9 years. With this law, China has now got permission to keep an eye on foreigners.
According to this law, China can investigate any documents, data, materials and articles related to the suspicion of espionage. Under the guise of this law, arbitrary raids are being conducted on the homes and offices of foreign companies and citizens doing business in China.
The US State Department said that China is arbitrarily targeting foreign business people and citizens under the guise of local laws. Many experts say that the law’s implementation in China will make it difficult for foreign companies to trust them. This can have a direct impact on China’s economy.
Meanwhile, China has also told its citizens to risk travelling to America carefully, as they may face crime and discrimination there.
Let us tell you that this advisory was issued between the two countries when Antony Blinken visited China last week. He talked about improving relations between the two countries.
