America Sought Help From The Assam Government; The Reason Is Related To World War II

US Consul General Melinda Pavek sought the Assam government’s help locating the remains of American soldiers who died in the northeastern state during World War II. Melinda Pavek, the Consul General of the United States of America in Kolkata, met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday and requested him to help find the remains of the soldiers.

Later Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on Twitter; The US Consul General has sought our support in helping locate the remains of approximately 1,000 American soldiers who lost their lives in World War II in Assam. I have assured him of all possible help in this regard.

Sarma noted the close ties between India and the United States and emphasized Assam’s growing economic potential for American investment. On the other hand, the Chief Minister’s Office said in another tweet, ‘Consul General Melinda Pavek was very happy to meet Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and discussed with the Chief Minister several issues including regional connectivity, energy, agriculture, health and climate change.’

The American Consulate tweeted that Pavek also met Governor Gulab Chand Kataria at Raj Bhavan on Thursday and discussed issues of mutual interest. Expressing his views regarding the important areas, Kataria said that Assam and the US could find new opportunities in the fields of higher education, research in science and technology and research in conservation measures that would benefit both.

On this occasion, the American envoy also learned about the Act East policy related to various issues and the development of Assam and other North Eastern states. During this, the Governor also highlighted the investments made by the Government of India in the entire North East region. At the same time, the US envoy assured support from the US government in taking forward the development initiatives.
