OpenAI plans to partner with Reliance Industries to expand its AI presence in India. According to a report by The Information, OpenAI and Meta are discussing a possible partnership with Reliance Jio to enable the distribution of ChatGPT in India.
Major Cut In ChatGPT Price
Sam Altman-led OpenAI is considering making ChatGPT’s current $20 monthly subscription plan cheaper by 75-85%. If this plan comes into effect, users in India can get more affordable benefits of AI services.
Reliance Wants To Host OpenAI Models Locally
According to the report, Reliance is discussing the possibilities of selling OpenAI’s models to its enterprise customers via API. Apart from this, the company is planning to host and operate OpenAI’s models in India so that Indian users’ data can be kept safe in the country itself.
Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries also discusses the possibility of locally operating OpenAI and Meta’s models. For this purpose, the company plans to build a three-gigawatt capacity data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat.
Jamnagar Project As World’s Largest Data Center
According to a previous Bloomberg report, Reliance is planning to build a 3 gigawatt capacity data center in Jamnagar, which will be several times larger than the largest data centers in the world currently.
The capacity of data centers is measured in megawatts, indicating how much energy they can provide to servers, cooling, and infrastructure. Higher megawatt capacity means more computing power, which is important for handling high-intensive workload processes like AI.
According to the report, Ambani is buying Nvidia’s AI semiconductors for this facility. During Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s visit to India in October last year, the two companies announced a partnership to build AI application infrastructure.
If this partnership succeeds, it could significantly change the accessibility and reliability of AI services in India.
