Elon Musk’s Starlink Internet Coming to India; Will Shake Up the Telecom Industry

There are reports that Elon Musk’s Starlink can start satellite internet service in India very soon. According to The New Indian Express, according to a report, Department of Telecom (DoT) officials say that in a meeting on September 20, it will be decided whether to allow Starlink to be licensed in India. The services are already available in 32 countries and are offered globally. Even in Ukraine, during the communication blackout, its services have played a significant role.

This Thing Written On The Website Of Starlink

Last year, Starlink applied for a Global Mobile Personal Communication via Satellite (GMPCS) license with the Indian Department of Telecommunications (DoT), according to the specified report. In 2021, Starlink launched the pre-booking channel in India. The government forced them to shut down in the event of pre-booking channels and required a license to operate them. The official website of Starlink is still informing that they are awaiting ‘regulatory approval’.

According to reports, an official said in the report, We did not encourage any company to provide services without a license. We experienced this in the case of Skype, where we tried not to bring the company into the licensing regime. This matter is beyond our control, and any provision is being violated.

The official also highlighted that other Internet-based services, commonly called OTT (Over-The-Top) services, should be brought under the licensing regime to ensure the safety of Indian users. He added, ‘If these OTT players come under the licensing regime, they must follow government guidance.’

Airtel and Jio are Also In the Race

Along with Starlink, Airtel and Jio are stepping up their efforts to launch satellite internet in India. OneWeb, backed by Airtel, has applied for a GMPCS license for Jio, which is part of it. After these companies obtain the license, they must purchase satellite spectrum provided by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
