There has been a significant attack on the government telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) server. Hackers have access to the personal and operational data of millions of BSNL users. According to the report, the telecom operator’s server was attacked. After this, the hackers obtained the SIM card details of millions of users, a home location, registered data, and critical security keys related to the server. According to the information, hackers can use this data for criminal activities like SIM card cloning, identity theft and threats.
Citing a data breach report by digital risk management firm Athenian Tech, News18 has reported that ‘kiberphant0m’ is behind the cyber attack on the BSNL server. This is the hackers’ username on the dark web forum. Whether this data breach has been carried out by a single person or a group of hackers is not confirmed.
Data Of Millions Of BSNL Users Stolen
According to the report, hackers have breached about 278GB of data of BSNL telecom operations. Apart from user data, the leaked data includes many server snapshots, which can be used for other attacks and create major security risks. According to the report, this data breach has given hackers access to International Mobile Number Subscriber Identity (IMSI) numbers, SIM card details, PIN codes, authentication keys, etc. Apart from this, snapshots of BSNL’s SOLARIS server are also included in the data.
According to the report, the hackers have offered to sell the stolen data for $5,000 (about Rs 4.18 lakh). The stolen data has been made available for purchase on the dark web. Hackers say that this offer is a special deal. The hefty price of the data suggests that it is quite sensitive.
It is worth noting that the data of the government telecom company BSNL was also breached in December 2023
