Vinesh Phogat, who retired from wrestling and joined the Congress party, refused to challenge the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against the appeal to award a joint silver medal in the Paris Olympics 2024. Lawyer Harish Salve made this big disclosure. Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the final of the women’s freestyle 50 kg wrestling event due to being over the set standard weight.
Due to this, Vinesh Phogat was completely out of the event and finished last. She filed an appeal against its decision in CAS. Harish Salve, who fought India’s case in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Kulbhushan Jadhav case, represented Vinesh in the court, who was fighting her case on behalf of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
Had To Return Empty-Handed From Paris
However, after a week-long hearing, the decision did not favour Vinesh Phogat. She had to return empty-handed from Paris. Recently, the Haryana-born wrestler targeted IOA president PT Usha, the Modi government, and Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Sanjay Singh. She said she got no help from the government and the Indian Olympic Association.
Initially, There Was No Cooperation From Vinesh’s Lawyers
Speaking to Times Now, Salve said Vinesh’s lawyers initially did not cooperate. He said, “Initially, there was a lack of coordination and harmony for a long time. This happened because the very good law firm appointed by the Indian Olympic Association was told by some lawyers appointed by the athlete that we would not share anything with you. We would not give you anything. Very late, we got everything.”
What Did Salve Say?
Salve said he fought this case very hard and offered Phogat to appeal against the CAS decision in the Swiss court. But she was not willing to pursue it. He said, “Later, we got everything and fought hard. I even proposed to the woman that we could challenge this decision in a Swiss court, but the lawyers told me that she did not want to pursue it.”
