Former West Indies captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul feels some regional players are more interested in making money from the game than representing the Caribbean team. Chanderpaul, who played for the regional side for two decades, commented that T20 leagues worldwide affect the West Indies team.
Chanderpaul told the Sydney Morning Herald, “There are many premier (T20) leagues worldwide. West Indies cricket is not what these guys would depend on these days, so I don’t think they are that keen. You can go and play and not focus on representing the West Indies. People are happy to do whatever comes while their cricketing careers don’t last long.”
The former left-handed batsman, who has scored more than 10,000 runs in Test cricket, said that he and his teammates did not play for money when they donned the West Indies jersey. “We played for pride,” he said. Let us tell you that most of the players of the West Indies team are interested in playing in IPL and other leagues, no matter how big a series the West Indies team is playing.
