Although Mumbai already has 3 big international stadiums, the Maharashtra government wants to give the city another big cricket stadium equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, which can add to the country’s glory. Mumbai also has the historic Wankhede stadium, but it has started to look small in this cricket-loving country.
In such a situation, a new cricket stadium is being considered in the city. The plan is that this stadium will be 4 times bigger than Wankhede, which will have all the modern facilities. Wankhede can accommodate 32000 people at a time, which means that about 1 lakh 30 thousand people can sit together and enjoy a cricket match in the new stadium. Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has started discussing the plan for the new stadium.
The Indian team has recently returned home after winning the T20 World Cup title. After this title win, Team India reached New Delhi on Thursday morning and had to reach Mumbai in the evening, where the city’s people were waiting to welcome it with open arms. Team India’s victory parade was held here amidst a crowd of lakhs. After this, the Maharashtra government honoured the Mumbai players who participated in the T20 World Cup the next day.
On this occasion, the state’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis raised the issue of a new stadium. He said that now the time has come for Mumbai to need a new stadium with arrangements to seat more spectators.
Fadnavis said ‘Mumbai now needs a stadium bigger than Wankhede. I know that Wankhede is a historical stadium, but now Mumbai needs a stadium with a capacity of more than 1 lakh and we will try to build it in the coming time.’ However, it has not yet been decided where the new stadium will be located in Mumbai and when there is a plan to build it.
However, Mumbai already has three international-level stadiums. Apart from Wankhede, Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai are also present here. Wankhede was built in 1974 and has been upgraded from time to time. DY Patil Stadium has a seating capacity of 60,000 people, while Brabourne Stadium can accommodate only 20,000 people.
