Deepened Dispute Between ICC-BCCI; 2023 World Cup Will Not Be Held In India?

The year 2023 is about to come, and the ODI World Cup is to be held at the end of this year. This World Cup is to be held in India, but something has happened which threatens India’s hosting. The International Cricket Council and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are at loggerheads over the tax dispute. This dispute between the two can snatch away the hosting of the World Cup from India.

According to media reports, the ICC has asked the BCCI to arrange tax exemption from the Government of India for organizing the ODI World Cup 2023. However, this isn’t easy because the Government of India does not give such relaxation in any event.

In the year 2016, when India hosted the T20 World Cup, even then this dispute came between ICC and BCCI. At that time, the BCCI could not get this exemption from the Government of India, and in the end, it had to pay Rs 190 crores of its share to the ICC.

The same situation has arisen again; according to ICC’s policy, the country hosting the ICC event has to coordinate with its government and make arrangements for tax exemption. If the BCCI does not do this for the 2023 ODI World Cup, it will have to pay its share of Rs 900 crore to the ICC.

It has been claimed in the reports that BCCI is not ready for this in such a situation; if such a situation arises, then BCCI can go to court against ICC. Apart from this, if the tax issue is not resolved and ICC does not get its share, it can also consider changing the host. In such a situation, BCCI will try to solve this issue soon.
