Aakash Chopra Slams RCB’s Spin Bowling Choices, Questions Team’s Strategy for Years

Aakash Chopra criticized Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for persistent bowling problems in IPL 2024, saying the team has failed to address this weakness over the years.

The former Indian cricketer spoke on RCB’s poor bowling performance in the current season, losing four out of five matches. Aakash Chopra pointed out that despite having a quality spinner like Yuzvendra Chahal, RCB let Chahal go and included Wanindu Hasaranga. However, eventually, he released Hasaranga as well. Aakash Chopra questioned RCB’s decision to invest in uncapped Indian spinners instead of addressing their bowling concerns more effectively this season.

In a social media post, Aakash Chopra expressed his disappointment: “You let Yuzvendra Chahal go to buy Wanindu Hasaranga. And then let him go to invest in uncapped Indian spinners. “It’s quite a long journey to understand that.” He criticized RCB for its historical inability to strengthen its bowling lineup, relying only on star batters like Virat Kohli and three overseas players for batting prowess.

RCB’s consistently poor performances in IPL tournaments have been widely criticized, especially considering they have never won the title in their 16-year history. Currently, RCB is ranked 9th in the IPL 2024 points table, and there is a big risk of slipping to the last position if the Mumbai Indians win their upcoming match.

A major weakness in the RCB team is the lack of experienced spinners. During the auction, the team management showed confidence in young and relatively inexperienced spinners. This decision has been questioned, as these spinners lack the experience required to perform consistently at the highest level, leading to RCB’s losing streak in the tournament.
