Double Decker Buses In Mumbai: Double-decker buses, which are the identity of Mumbai, will be closed from today. New electric buses will be run in place of these diesel buses. These double-decker buses will set out on their last journey today on the roads of Mumbai.
Today, they will be flagged off in a special program, after which they will be sent to a special museum to be kept. Diesel buses have a life span of 15 years, but due to their historical importance, they have been run till now. However, now it has been decided to replace them with electric buses.
Double Decker Buses Running Since The British Era
Know that these red-colored double-decker buses operated by BEST have been running in Mumbai since 1937, i.e., the British era. You must have noticed that in most of the Hindi films in the 1990s, if a Mumbai scene was shown, a double-decker bus was seen in it. These diesel-powered double-decker buses of BEST were considered the identity of Mumbai, but after today, they will not be seen running on the roads. These double-decker buses, which ran in the streets of Mumbai for 86 years, have settled in the hearts of Mumbaikars.
Craze Of Double-Decker Buses In Mumbai
According to the information, in the 1990s, BEST had around 900 double-decker buses in Mumbai. There was a time when people of Mumbai used BEST’s double-decker buses more than local trains. However, by the beginning of 2023, BEST had only 50 double-decker buses left.
Why Are Double Decker Buses Being Removed From The Roads?
It is worth noting that buses are being removed from the roads because their life span is over. There was no option but to phase them out. Instead of these BEST double-decker buses, new AC double-decker buses will now be seen running on the roads of Mumbai.
