Indian Railways has a special plan for Mumbai in the next five years. The Railways plan to add 250 new suburban services, revamp the rail network, and build new mega terminals to ease rail travel in the country’s financial capital. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that the railways are planning to redesign the suburban network to reduce the ‘cross movement’ of trains and improve transportation in Mumbai and its suburban areas.
Preparations Are Also Being Made To Reduce The Distance Between Two Trains
According to the news, the Railway Minister said that the Railways is also planning to implement new technology to reduce the distance between two trains from 180 seconds to 150 seconds. He said more attention is being paid to separating suburban and long-distance rail services. The suburban rail system in Mumbai operates 3,200 services carrying more than 75 lakh passengers daily.
₹2,62,200 Crore Allotted For Railways In The Budget
The Railway Minister said a record allotment of ₹2,62,200 crore has been made for railways in the Union Budget 2024. A large part of this budget, i.e., ₹1,08,000 crore, has been allocated for security-related activities. Funds have been allotted to different states in the budget. For example, in the budget for the year 2024-25, Uttar Pradesh has been allocated Rs 19,848 crore for the development of rail infrastructure.
Rs 14,738 crore has been allocated to Madhya Pradesh to develop rail infrastructure. A record of Rs 13,941 crore has been allocated to West Bengal. Rs 10,033 crore has been allotted for Bihar. Rs 7,302 crore has been allotted to Jharkhand.
