In its investigation, the World Health Organization (WHO) has identified seven cough syrups manufactured in India for their substandard quality, which led to the death of nearly 300 people worldwide. WHO has blacklisted 7 Made-in-India products in its investigation related to the supply of contaminated cough syrup.
20 contaminated drugs were included in the WHO investigation, whose consumption has killed more than 300 people worldwide. The rest of the drug products on the list are from Indonesia, according to WHO officials.
Haryana-based Maiden Pharmaceuticals, Marion Biotech, and QP PharmaChem are the main manufacturers of these contaminated syrups, reports NDTV. Significantly, the WHO issued an earlier alert regarding contaminated drugs made in India, but this list came after investigating the matter.
In its investigation, WHO found high levels of diethylene and ethylene glycol in cough syrup, which caused many deaths worldwide. India’s supply of substandard medicines came into the limelight after several deaths were reported in African countries after consuming cough syrup. Last year, more than 60 children died in Gambia and about 20 children in Uzbekistan previous to drugs made in India.
