The Government of India has maintained restrictions on the export of onion to control its prices in the domestic market. Even though the government has lifted the complete ban on onion export, it has again decided to impose heavy export duties.
This Duty Will Be Charged To Export
An official statement on Friday said that the government has decided to impose an export duty of 40 per cent on the export of onion. The government first imposed a 40 per cent export duty on onion exports in August last year. The government had taken this decision last year after onion prices increased wildly in the domestic market.
Was On Duty Last Year
The export duty was initially imposed until December 31, 2023. After that, when no expected improvement in the supply in the domestic market occurred, the government banned the export of onions. The ban was gradually relaxed for some time.
Exemption Given For These Countries
The government of India recently approved sending onions to some neighbouring countries amidst the ban on the export of onions. Last month, the Central Government informed that approval had been given to send a consignment of about 1 lakh tonnes of onion to six countries. The six countries to which the onion export has been approved include Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, Bhutan, Bahrain, Mauritius and Sri Lanka. 99 thousand 150 tonnes of onion will be exported to all six neighbouring countries.
Changes Implemented From Today
The government has changed its trade policies regarding onion and other agri commodities. The government has exempted desi gram from import duty until December 31, 2025. Similarly, it has been decided that 31the import duty exemption on yellow peas will be on October 31, 2024. The statement says that October 31 became effective on May 4, which is today.
