Google Axes 12,000 Employees; Now Waze Mapping App in Line

In January this year, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced to lay off around 12,000 people. Now once again, Google has announced layoffs.

According to the information, Google is removing people from its Waze mapping app. The advertising system of the mapping app Waze is being merged with Google advertising technology.

Google acquired Waze in June 2013 for US$1.1 billion. Waze is an app that helps users find the best route. Along with this, it also gives them real-time traffic information. The app reportedly has 140 million users.

According to a Reuters report, the company has started laying off the Waze mapping service from Tuesday. Its effect will also be seen in India. However, it is not yet clear how many people will show the way out. According to the report, the Waze mapping app has over 500 employees.

Google plans to move the advertising management of Waze to a global business organisation and align it with Google Maps, which will result in layoffs in sales, operations, marketing and analyst roles related to monetising Waze ads.

Billionaire businessman Sir Christopher Hohn’s hedge fund, one of the investors in Google’s parent company Alphabet, has written to the company alleging that Google and YouTube employees are paid too much and its workforce is cut, according to a report in the British newspaper Guardian.

In 2023, tech companies are laying off on a large scale, given the economy’s weak condition and their position. Many companies like Twitter, Meta, Amazon, and Salesforce have done heavy layoffs this year.
