FSSAI Directions for Packaged Food Items: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), an organization that monitors the quality of food items in India, has issued new guidelines for companies selling packaged food items. FSSAI is preparing to make it mandatory to print information about salt, sugar, and saturated fat in bold letters on packaged food items.
In a meeting held on July 6, FSSAI decided it is necessary to properly label all nutrition-related information, such as salt-sugar content, etc., in packaged food items. FSSAI has made it clear that along with printing nutrition-related information in bold letters, companies will now have to print it in large font. For this, a draft notification will be issued by FSSAI. Approval of the proposal will be obtained from all the parties involved in the matter.
This Is The Reason Behind Changing The Rules
The food regulator will issue a draft notification in this matter to seek suggestions from all parties. Some of the suggestions will be included in it. After this, a notification will be issued, and it will be made a law. FSSAI made this decision during its 44th meeting in the presence of Chairman Apurva Chandra.
In a statement, FSSAI said that the change in rules is being made in the customers’ interest. This will help consumers understand the nutritional value of any product, allowing them to decide whether to buy it. It will also help prevent food-related diseases.
Customers Will Benefit
It is worth noting that there has been controversy over the amount of salt and sugar in packaged food items for the last few months. For a long time, companies have demanded that they record essential information like sugar, salt, and trans fat in bold letters on packaged food items. This will help customers get information about food items’ nutritional value.
