In the first quarter of this year, there was a big discussion about the India plant of the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer, Tesla. After the EV policy of the government of India had come into existence, it was believed that this year, Elon Musk would start making Tesla cars in India. Elon Musk has also announced to go to India. Preparations for this had started in full swing.
However, Elon Musk surprised everyone by cancelling his visit to India, reaching China, and keeping silent about Tesla’s India plant. Now, there is a buzz again about the Tesla plant. It is claimed that Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat are leading in acquiring this plant.
Tesla Wants To Make Cheap EV Cars In India
A Business Standard report citing sources claims that Tesla has started working on the India plant plan again. The company wants to make it a global manufacturing unit. Tesla wants to make cheap EV cars here, with prices between Rs 18 and 25 lakh. It also wants to export them from India to other countries. Apart from this, the company is also looking for a local partner.
Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu Are Leading The Race
Sources said that if Tesla focuses most on the plan to make budget cars for India, then Maharashtra will become its first choice. If it gives priority to export, it will give priority to setting up a plant in Tamil Nadu. However, if they get adequate subsidies from the state government, the company will move its plant to Gujarat. They will incur logistics losses when setting up a plant in Gujarat. They will want to compensate for this in the form of subsidy.
The Company Has Opened Its Office In Pune
The report claims that Tesla has held several talks with a local partner about setting up a manufacturing plant near Pune. Tesla can build a sales network in areas like Mumbai and Delhi NCR. Tesla India Motors recently opened an office in Panchsheel Business Park in Pune. However, the auto sector’s ecosystem already exists in Tamil Nadu. Apart from this, the ports there can also be useful for Tesla.
