1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Sold for Record $51.7 Million, Becoming Second Most Expensive Car Ever

A 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO has been sold for $51.7 million (about Rs 430 crore) at an auction in New York. After which it has become the most expensive Ferrari car ever sold. Besides, it has also become the second most expensive car in the world so far. The 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO was sold by RM Sotheby’s to an anonymous bidder on November 13, 2023.

Has Won Many Important Races

This 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO (chassis number 3765) was number 14 of 34 built with Tipo coachwork. It was built as one of four 330 LMB (along with the Le Mans Berlinetta) GT racing cars built in 1963. It is also the only GTO Tipo 1962 driven by Scuderia Ferrari. Mike Parks and Lorenzo Bandini also drove the car for Scuderia Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and it also achieved a runner-up finish in the 1965 Sicilian Hillclimb Championship.

The first Ferrari Club of America President’s Patent, it won the FCS Platinum Award and the Coppa Bella Macchina at the Cavallino Classic, placed second in the GTO class at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and first at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Show.

Engine

The 1962 Ferrari 330 LM/250 GTO chassis number 3765 is the only works GTO example, which was equipped with a 4.0-litre 330 engine generating 390 hp of power at 7,500 rpm, but had its engine replaced at the end of the 250’s racing career with the Scuderia.

Now, it is equipped with a 3.0-litre GTO developmental engine. Ferrari had Formula 1 and motorcycle world champion John Surtees test the car at the Modena Autodrome to ensure the engine swap went smoothly.

This 330 LM/250 GTO is also documented with factory records showing its early history, including two sets of build sheets (one each for factory ready for Nürburgring and Le Mans) and a third Includes a spec sheet that forms the framework for the factory update.

In May 1963, the specification of the 250 GTO was revised for private racing, including the current engine setup. It has become the second most expensive car after the Mercedes 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe, sold at an auction in Germany last year for a bid of €135 million (Rs 1,202 crore).
