A controversy related to Nepal cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane is not taking its name to stop. Scotland players refused to shake hands with Sandeep Lamichhane after their three-wicket defeat at Kirtipur on Friday. It was a silent protest by the Scottish players to the spinner’s presence and participation in the ICC’s Cricket World Cup League 2 series. After the game, the team shook hands with every other Nepal player but explicitly declined to do so with Lamichhane.
ICC Kept Silence
Lamichhane, facing allegations of sexual assault, is currently out on bail. He was cleared to play in the series after CAN (Cricket Association Nepal) lifted the suspension from his bail. However, the ICC has not publicly commented on Lamichhane’s selection. Scotland decided to put their hands down in submission. It is believed that Lamichhane was informed about the protest well in advance.
Lamichhane Took 3 Wickets
Lamichhane took 3 for 27 in Nepal’s victory. In Tuesday’s opening game against Namibia, Lamichhane took 3 for 66 in a two-wicket win. Lamichhane’s presence in the pre-series training camp has led to backlash from the country’s fans and on social media. He was arrested last October on his return to Kathmandu after being issued an arrest warrant while playing in the Caribbean Premier League. He denied the allegations in a post on Facebook. Nepal’s next match will be against Namibia on Saturday.
