How World Environment Day Started
According to the information received, the United Nations organized the first World Conference on the problem of environmental pollution in Stockholm (Sweden) in 1972, in which 119 countries participated. This was the first time all countries adopted the One Earth principle, which gave birth to the United Nations Environment Programme. It was decided that Environment Day will be celebrated on 5 June yearly.
The purpose of celebrating this day was to raise awareness of the problem of pollution and promote environmental protection. The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi also gave a lecture at that year’s conference. This was India’s first step towards environmental protection.
Objective Of World Environment Day
The main objective of celebrating ‘World Environment Day’ is to spread environmental awareness among people all over the world.
