GAIL India Makes World’s First Ship-to-Ship LNG Transfer, Cuts Emissions by 7,000 Tons

The country’s leading gas company, GAIL India, has become the first company in the world to transfer ship-to-ship LNG. With this new experiment, the company saved money and significantly reduced CO2 emissions. Government company GAIL India conducted this experiment on the US to India lane route. The company has agreed to buy 5.8 million tonnes of LNG annually from America.

Ships Travel 19.5 Thousand Nautical Miles In 54 Days

To travel from America to India, the LNG ship has to make a round trip of 19554 nautical miles in 54 days. The LNG ship from Sabine Pass in America to India via the Suez Canal and Gibraltar also emits 15600 tonnes of carbon emissions. Efforts are made to reduce carbon emissions by using new technology and changing the ship’s destination. However, this new GAIL experiment helped keep CO2 emissions very low during the journey.

How Did This Transfer Happen?

GAIL had recently signed an agreement with the ship Castillo de Santisteban to bring LNG from America. This ship transferred the LNG to Qatargas’ Al Gharafa ship in Gibraltar and returned to America. From there, Al Gharafa brought the LNG to Dahej Port in Gujarat. This new system saved approximately 8736 nautical travel miles and 7000 tons of CO2 emissions. Besides, gas also arrived in India in just 27 days instead of 54, and GAIL India also got savings of about 1 million dollars.

Floating CNG Station Was Built On Ganga

GAIL had built a floating CNG station on the Ganga River in Varanasi a few months ago. This station can fill fuel in boats running on CNG. The company was given the ‘Innovation Award – India and Midstream Project of the Year’ for this innovative experiment. The company had converted about 1200 boats from petrol-diesel to CNG. Due to this, boat owners have started saving about Rs 70 lakh every month.
