A decision of the Indian Government has proved to be a boon for Pakistan, and in a way, its ‘lottery’ has opened. In fact, in July 2023, the Indian government banned the export of non-Basmati rice. Due to this decision of India, there was a rice shortage in the global market. Due to this, the demand for Pakistani rice has increased significantly. Amidst all this, Pakistan has claimed that, at present, Pakistan is exporting more Basmati rice to European markets than India.
Pakistan Benefits From This Ban?
India is the world’s largest rice exporter. However, the Indian government has currently banned the export of non-Basmati rice. According to the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, the export of non-Basmati white rice has been banned. There has been a continuous increase in the prices of food items in India in the last few months. That’s why this has been done.
On the other hand, Pakistan has started benefiting from this ban. After India imposed the ban, the demand for Pakistani rice increased in the global market. Also, the US Department of Agriculture has estimated that Pakistan may benefit from India’s ban decision.
Will Export Rice Instead Of India!
This is why international buyers are now turning to Pakistani exporters. Recently, Pakistan’s Commerce Ministry claimed that currently, Pakistan is exporting more Basmati rice to European markets than India. Now, how valid this claim is and how false it is will be known in the coming time, but Pakistan is indeed very happy, and it feels that it will win the lottery because it will export rice instead of India.
Opportunity To Increase Stake
Let us tell you that the share of non-Basmati rice in rice exported from India is about 25 per cent. India exports non-Basmati rice mainly to America, Italy, Spain, Canada, Australia and Sri Lanka. Now, there is panic in these countries for the purchase of rice. In such a situation, Pakistan has an opportunity to meet this demand and increase its share in rice-purchasing countries.
