India-France Commit On Plastic Pollution: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Paris on Thursday (July 13) during his two-day visit, where he was warmly welcomed. On Friday (July 14), PM Modi held talks with President Emmanuel Macron.
Meanwhile, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, India and France have committed to eliminating pollution caused by single-use plastic products. It said that pollution caused by littered plastic waste is a global environmental issue that should be resolved immediately. It has adverse effects on the ecosystem and the marine ecosystem in particular.
Progress Made In Tackling Plastic Pollution
According to the UN environmental program UNEP, single-use plastic products are typically used once before being thrown away, including food packaging, bottles, straws, containers, cups, cutlery and shopping bags. It was said in the statement that there has been progress in dealing with plastic pollution at the global level.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs release, there is a need to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic products, especially in India and France, and consider alternative solutions. Both countries said that single-use plastic products should be banned entirely and reusable plastic products should be used in their place.
Many Agreements Between The Two Countries
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to France on July 13-14, several agreements, including fighter jets, helicopter engines, strategic areas, and space science, were signed between the two countries. India and France are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the strategic partnership. Regarding Indo-French defence ties during the visit, PM Modi had said that France is an important partner in ‘Make in India’ and self-reliant India… be it submarines or naval aircraft.
